Class B vehicles are some of the most common large trucks on the road including, but not limited to, passenger buses, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, cement mixers, or food trucks. A Class B vehicle is any single vehicle which has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight that does not exceed 10,000 pounds.

Any driver seeking a Class B CDL is required to complete THEORY and BEHIND-THE-WHEEL training and successfully pass a CDL skills test. The Smart Horizons Class B Theory curriculum satisfies the THEORY training requirement ONLY.

Smart Horizons is an approved Training Provider for THEORY curriculum. The various Smart Horizons ELDT curriculum tracks align with federal requirements, and course completions are reported to the Training Provider Registry.

STS Highlights: April 2024

It’s been raining for days. The grass is growing fast, trees in my area are turning green, and the pollen count is off the charts. Spring is blooming.

April signifies two very important themes for child welfare: Child Abuse Prevention and Autism Acceptance. The statistics for both are staggering.

• According to the National Children’s Alliance, more than 600,000 children are abused in the U.S. each year.
• According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDN) Network, an estimated 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

Frankly, if you are not taking steps to train employees working with children to identify and report child abuse OR make adjustments to accommodate ASD, you really should be.

On a much lighter note, Spring is also associated with cleaning. Do you deep clean your school buses?

STS Highlights: March 2024

This month I stumbled on a Farmer’s Almanac post about “March” which shared some fascinating fun facts, folklore, and holidays. I’m passing some of it along:

• March is named for the Roman God of War, Mars.
• We have International Women’s Day, the start of Daylight Savings Time, Ramadan, St. Patrick’s Day, the Spring equinox, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter this month.
• March’s full moon, the Worm Moon, reaches peak illumination on the morning of March 25.
• March is typically the time to start a vegetable garden.
• Folklore: A wet spring, a dry harvest.
• Folklore: Thunder in spring, Cold will bring.

You might be wondering what any of this has to do with training, and that answer is, “Nothing.” But it is important to take breaks and relax every once in a while, and sometimes tidbits of information like these can inspire.

With the coming of Spring, I’ve pulled together resources to help clean and start fresh. It is still LOVE the BUS Month!

February marks the month-long celebration of Love the Bus, a time to show gratitude towards the dedicated professionals who ensure the safety of students on their journey to and from school. This initiative is a meaningful way to recognize the diverse group of individuals who make the yellow school bus experience possible for students.

NAPT created a new digital resource toolkit and guide complete with everything you need to provide recognition, praise, and appreciation for everyone on your transportation team. Join school districts across the country and spend this month celebrating pupil transportation.

In line with the NAPT Mission, the Love the Bus Campaign helps bring national attention to the importance of pupil transportation and the dedicated work individuals, schools, and partnering organizations play in keeping school buses the safest mode of transportation for children traveling to and from school.
